Surface Tension!

The Preppers LOVE science experiments! Little minds are naturally curious about the world around them, what better way to learn than hands on?! We’re learning about Pond Life this week, and one of the most interesting creatures to inhabit ponds is the water strider. We watched videos of the insect walking on water to introduce our unit on surface tension. We learned what molecules are, and that water molecules like to bind tightly together, forming a layer along the water surface. The water strider has long feet with water repellent hairs that help it to disperse its weight along the water’s surface. We poured milk into bowls, added drops of food coloring to observe them floating on the warer’s surface. We then added drops of dish soap to break the molecular bond…then we just watched the show!!!
